Regions need bylaws to better handle disasters

Regional administrations should have local bylaws providing incentives and guidance and to encourage communities to be more prepared in an event of natural disasters, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) said Thursday.

"The regional administrations, for example, could give tax reductions for the building of quake-resistant or tsunami-proof buildings in disaster-prone areas," LIPI's deputy for scientific sciences Jan Sopaheluwakan said.
